Our story · Boutique hotel Norway

Where Klippfisk Met Madeira

For two centuries Kristiansund was the klippfisk capital of Norway. From this wharf, schooners carried dried and salted cod south to Portugal and sailed home with salt and casks of Madeira wine. Madeirabrygga, “the Madeira wharf”, is the warehouse where those two cargoes met.

We restored it timber by timber. Pine beams, granite quay walls and Nordmøre wool now sit beside cobalt-and-white azulejo tiles, brass and terracotta from the south. The result is a design hotel Norway has rarely seen: 48 loft rooms and suites, an Atlantic restaurant, a stone-vaulted wine cellar and a classic land-based casino in the old salt store.

It is luxury accommodation Norway-style: quiet, warm and generous with space, for guests who want a hotel in Kristiansund with real character rather than another glass tower. It is also where our name comes from: a charming Norwegian hotel with a Madeira soul.

The wharf through time

Brand story

  1. Cod from the Nordmøre coast is salted, then dried on the bare rocks around the harbour. The new warehouse stores the finished klippfisk before it is loaded onto ships bound for southern Europe.

  2. Schooners return from Portugal with salt for the next season’s catch and casks of Madeira wine. The ground-floor salt store, today Salthuset Casino, is kept busy all year.

  3. Modern processing moves the trade elsewhere. The building is left standing on the quay, its timber frame and granite foundations untouched by later fashions.

  4. Craftspeople repair the original pine beams and granite walls by hand, then add azulejo tiles, brass and terracotta as a nod to the Portuguese side of the story.

  5. Madeirabrygga welcomes guests to loft rooms, Brygga Restaurant, The Madeira Cellar, Salthuset Casino, two pools and the Seilloftet conference hall.

The dates and events in this timeline are part of the Madeirabrygga brand story, inspired by Kristiansund’s klippfisk heritage.

Brygga Restaurant, fine dining in Norway: candlelit tables with scallops and langoustine dishes, tall windows onto the evening harbour and chefs at work under a copper hood

Fine dining Norway

Brygga Restaurant

Atlantic cooking on the old klippfisk quay: cod, halibut, langoustine and Nordmøre lamb, with Madeira in the glass.

Signature dish at Brygga: pan-roasted cod with new potatoes, sea herbs and a glossy sauce on a dark stoneware plate, served with a crystal glass of Madeira
Signature: skrei cod, new potatoes, samphire and Madeira butter sauce.

Brygga cooks the way the wharf once traded: northern produce, southern warmth. The klippfisk that made Kristiansund rich returns as a reinterpreted bacalhau, slow-cooked and served with chickpeas and smoked paprika.

Langoustines come from the Nordmøre coast, lamb from the hill farms inland and halibut from boats that land a few hundred metres away. The seasonal tasting menu follows the year from spring skrei to autumn game, and every course can be paired with a vintage Madeira or a glass from our Portuguese and European list.

The Madeira Cellar, a wine bar in Kristiansund: a stone-vaulted cellar with wine racks, a hammered brass bar with crystal decanters of Madeira, navy velvet stools and an azulejo-framed back bar

Wine bar Kristiansund

The Madeira Cellar

Below the warehouse, in the stone-vaulted cellar where casks once waited for the next schooner, we pour the wine that gave this wharf its name.

Madeira is fortified, then slowly warmed for years, which makes it one of the longest-lived wines in the world. An opened bottle keeps for months, so we can pour rare vintages by the glass. Our list holds more than 120 labels, from young five-year-olds to bottles older than the restoration itself.

Grown on the coolest, highest vineyards. Pale, bright and bone-dry with notes of almond and citrus peel. Superb as an aperitif and with oysters or cured fish.

Golden and gently smoky, with dried apricot and a lively acidity. Our sommelier’s choice with halibut, langoustine and the bacalhau.

Amber, raisined and nutty, with caramel and coffee on the finish. Lovely with Norwegian farmhouse cheese and Nordmøre lamb.

The richest style: dark, velvety and sweet, balanced by Madeira’s famous acidity. Pour it with dessert, or simply by the fire at the end of the night.
